Torah mantle
Torah mantle (scroll cover) donated by the Pontypridd Hebrew Congregation in 1979. Wine coloured velvet embroidered with Star of David and crown in silk and gold. Fringed with yellow silk. Two holes at top to hold handles of scroll. One of pair with F79.243.18.
Scroll cover (torah binder) consists of a rigid oval disk (cardboard?) with two holes to fit over handles for rolling torah scroll. Wine coloured velvet (synthetic pile) covers and hangs down from this disk. This velvet 'skirt' is constructed from two panels, stitched together vertically along the sides, with 16cm long slits on the lower section of the seams. The front of the 'skirt' is embroidered with Star of David (yellow synthetic thread stitched over white fibrous (cotton) padding, with edges outlined using couched gold-coloured metal purl thread). Above is a crown (yellow and white synthetic thread, as well as couched metal purl thread [as above] stitched over padded white synthetic (?) satin fabric) with two Hebrew letters on either side (yellow synthetic thread stitched over white fibrous [cotton] padding). On the bottom is an embroidered inscription: 'Presented by Mr & Mrs S. Littlestone 1951' (yellow synthetic thread). Yellow synthetic fringe (width = 5cm) is applied to upper edge around the circumference of the disk (hand stitched using overcast stitches in yellow silk [?] thread). Fringe is also applied to front panel of skirt, at 6.5cm above lower edge (machine stitched using grey thread). Scroll cover is lined with silvery-grey coloured synthetic? 4/1 twill fabric.
