Castell a Bae Caernarfon [Caernarvon Castle and Bay]

POCOCK, Nicholas (1741 - 1821)

Castell a Bae Caernarfon

Cyfrwng: olew ar gynfas

Maint: 94.5 x 121.9 cm

Derbyniwyd: 1946; Prynwyd

Rhif Derbynoli: NMW A 2864

Ganed Pocock yn Lerpwl a chafodd ei brentisio gydag adeiladwr llongau gan weithio fel capten ar y môr. Tua 1780 cafodd ei annog gan Joshua Reynolds i droi at beintio'n amser llawn. Arbenigai ar bynciau morwrol, ac ym 1789 symudodd i Lundain lle roedd yn aelod sylfaenol o'r Gymdeithas Lluniau Dyfrlliw. Dangoswyd yr olygfa hon yn y Sefydliad Prydeinig ym 1808. Mae triniaeth wastad, gyweiraidd y darlun olew yn adlewyrchiad o hoffter yr arlunydd o weithio mewn dyfrlliw.

Is there a possibility that this quite impressive marine painting could be put on show.. As mentioned previously, Pocock is a very well respected maritime painter and with so few such paintings and the Welsh connection, surely it deserves a showing, if only for a short time.

With so few marine paintings exhibited, it does seem a pity that room cannot be found for this one by Pocock, A very highly regarded marine painter and certainly the best known of the Bristol marine painters. Whatismore, it's a welsh subject!

As a great marine and coastal scene enthusiast, it would be good to see this nicely composed and executed work by one of the best of the Bristol based painters on view, especially as there are not that many of this genre on view. There is quite an Italianate feel about this particular scene, with particular similarities to the work of the Dutch Italianates, such as Jan Both.
