Dear Robert Gyngell,

Thank you for your email.

This article draws heavily upon versions of presentations given by myself and a now retired colleague during the planning of the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea, which opened in 2005, but there is some phraseology which indicate final compilation by someone else who I have failed to positively identify.

I hope that this information may be useful for you. Thank you for your interest in the Museum and in the collection.

Yours sincerely,

Jennifer Protheroe-Jones

The statement that Wales can claim to be the first industrial nation is based on the results of the 1851 Census which showed that there were more people employed in industry than in agriculture in Wales - this was the first time that this occurred in any country.

The 'People' Gallery at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea, explores aspects of Wales through the 1851 Census, and displays the volume for Wales presenting the results of the Census, published by the Government.

Yours sincerely,
