Hi, I would appreciate some advise on where I can find information on my two grandfathers and their mining activities. One worked at Lewis Merthyr around the 40-50s and then Hafodyrynys thereafter. The spent time as a teenager at Tirpentwys 30s to 40s. Thanks

Hi Raymond,
Unfortunately lamp room books, which would have noted colliers’ names and addresses, have not usually survived. I haven’t come across any for the Garw Valley as yet. The only other linking of names and addresses is after a disaster when the names and addresses of the victims are noted during the enquiry.
Your grandfather may have worked in either Garw or Ffaldau Colliery, but could have also worked in one of the area’s smaller pits.
It isn’t until Nationalisation in 1947 that such records are kept.
Sorry that I can’t be of more help.
Best wishes,
Ceri

I would appreciate any help in finding a historical collection of miners names and dates in association with ther collieries. I am interested in the mines of Pontycymer where my grandfather James Escott worked as a Hewer in the early 1900s but have no idea which colliery or for how long. He married in 1905 and is shown as living at 17 Ivor Street Pontycymer in 1911.
