Post-Medieval silver thimble
Small closed thimble made of silver sheet, with the separate crown soldered to the main body. It is complete, although damaged with horizontal, concentric bands of uniformly executed annulets on the external surface and the same annulet pattern on the crown, set in lines. The rim is lipped with a single band of beading directly above. Near the base on one side is a small, plain, sub-rectangular panel or cartouche with the crudely engraved initials ‘EW’ in neat serif Roman capitals and a small makers mark bearing the initials WC within a shield. The thimble has split vertically along its original solder seam.
Height 16.8mm; diameter at top 12.4 x 13mm; thickness of rim 0.6mm; weight 4.57g.
