Medieval lead ampulla
The ampulla is fragmentary, represented by the base or side of the body only (with a surviving length of 15.4mm and a weight of 6.4g containing sediment). The body has a maximum surviving width of 22.4mm and a thickness of 6.8mm. The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has three surviving bold and curved ribs, producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59) Type I. The ribs are wider at the base, narrowing towards the top. The reverse face is flat and plain with a bevelled edge.
