Roman copper alloy plate brooch
Plate brooch of lozenge shape with enamel decoration. The two points, one at each end of the long axis of the brooch, are both deliberately distorted. That at the hinge end carries a double transverse moulding and beyond, the end is slightly damaged or badly moulded. That st the catchplate end is elongated and carries an ovoid knob. the decoration is contained within a broad border which outlines a lozengic field. The motif is delineated by copper alloy walls with infilling of enamel and set in a blue enamel background. The walls depict a frontward facing figure wearing a radiate crown and driving a rudimentary chariot, through the bottom of which his legs and feet extend, and flanked to each side by a horse, the head and fore-part of which are shown in profile at a gallop. Two raised dots of copper alloy break up the field beyond the horses' muzzles.
