Oral history recording with Enzo Calzaghe, father of British boxer, Joe Calzaghe. He was born in Sassari, Sardinia, Italy and moved to Bedford when he was two but finally settled in Wales after meeting his wife in Cardiff. Part 2 of 5 (AV 11352 - 11356).Recorded as part of the Italian Memories in Wales project (2008-10), delivered by ACLI-ENAIP and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
00.01 Enzo’s father was born in Ittiri and his mother was born near Sassari. Enzo was born in the city of Sassari. He describes his life in Italy as ‘continental’: a sunny, laid back life. He was brought up in Bedford which was very different and where he felt very British. Enzo remembers returning to Italy at nine or ten when it captured his imagination. He describes his parents as ‘not typical immigrants’; they came for work, and weren’t planning to stay. They were hard working people; his mother worked cleaning offices and his father worked long hours. He explains why they left, due to lack of work and an unstable Italian government- immigration was the normal reaction. His mother’s brother married his father’s sister- the Prodi family. They all left for London together as a family. 05.00 Family is very important to Enzo, he believes that this is linked to the Italian culture. His family are very close and they live close to one another. He compares the respect for elders and the family upheld in the Italian culture to that of Britain, which he believes is much less respectful.
