Medieval lead ampulla
The ampulla is incomplete and distorted, missing the neck and base (with a surviving length of 36.8mm and a weight of 28.8g). The stubs of the loop survive on one side with a width of 9.1mm (2.9mm internal). The body is mostly closed below the missing neck and has a maximum width of 38.2mm and a thickness of 8.3mm. The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has seven bold and curved ribs, producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59), Type I. The ribs are slightly wider at the base and narrow towards the neck. The reverse face is flat and plain with a bevelled edge, where it survives.
