Bowl, earthenware, standing on a rounded spreading waisted foot-rim, rounded curving sides; transfer-printed in brown and crudely overpainted in red, yellow, green and blue enamels with around the exterior sides of the bowl the inscriptions "England England...etc" and "Now weigh the anchor...etc" both enclosed by wreaths of flowers and with a small sailing ship to the top, and the inscription "THE SAILOR'S FAREWELL" printed above a coastal scene with figures and a sailing ship on the sea, around the interior sides of the bowl the inscription "When tempests mingle sea and sky...etc" enclosed by a wreath of flowers and with a small sailing ship to the top, the inscription "MAY THEY EVER BE UNITED...etc" printed on scrolling banners and a shield forming part of an emblematic design with an eagle, a lion and the flags of England and France, and the inscription "The TOKEN of JACKS safe return to his TRUE LOVE" printed above a harbour scene with figures and ships, to the centre of the well the inscription "THE SAILOR'S RETURN ...etc" printed above and below a coastal scene with figures and a distant sailing ship on the sea, the printed designs surrounded to the interior and exterior of the bowl surrounded by crudely painted splashed pink lustre borders and scrolling pink lustre lines, pink lustre bands around the foot-rim and lip-rim.
