Truncheon
The painting and decorating of a truncheon was more than just ornamentation - by having a royal crown or coat of arms, it showed that the constable was acting with the authority of the Crown.
Constable's wooden truncheon, painted black (some paint now flaked off). Royal arms painted on in gold, red and blue, with motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. Also 'I. RICHARDSON 1839' painted gold on red background. Unpainted and turned at one end to form handgrip. With turned butt
