Medieval pottery incurved dish
Dish with incurved walls in a pink to light-red fabric with some sooting on both surfaces. Many fragments were foun, probably all from the same vessel. The height of the sides varied considerably and two sections are therefore illustrated. See Alkington , fig 6, 10, Gloucester: New Market Hall, fig 36, 11, Beckery Chapel 35, and Laverstock, 41-4. Considerable variations within the type occur but parallels for our vessel can be found in S Wales and the Sth West (barry Island 1 and 2, Laverstock, 43-44). The dish is perforated and modern thinking suggest they were used as a dripping tray during cooking. (NMB2004)
