Recordiad sain / Audio recording: Mauro Caffarelli
Oral history recording with Mauro Caffarelli who was born in Casale Monferrato, Italy and moved to Aberystwyth when he was three or four years old. Part 2 of 2 (AV 11350 - AV 11351). Recorded as part of the Italian Memories in Wales project (2008-10), delivered by ACLI-ENAIP and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
00.01 Their children went to Italian lessons and Mauro thinks that this may have helped them learn other languages as well. When asked if he would go back to live in Italy, Mauro says he would consider it, yet finding work and the Italian bureaucracy may hold him back. Bardi has become a sort of retirement town as many people move back when they are older, yet he doesn’t see this as a negative point. Families visit in the summer whereas in the winter the town becomes quieter. Mauro talks of culture differences in Britain and Italy: crime and violence being more of a problem in Britain. Yet some people who move back don’t settle in as well as they may have expected.
