Roman stone quern
A single fragment comprising approximately 31 per cent of an upper stone which has a thickness of 61 mm. at the circumference, and an estimated diameter of 0.425m. The elevated, slightly convex upper surface accomodates part od a lateral handle-chase that tapers to a hollow-chamfered terminal. At the centre lies the shallow hopper, which has an estimated diameter of 0.16 m. The thickness of the stone contracts to a mere 34 mm., at the bottom of the hopper, where part of a single sub-rectangular rynd-chase, together with a small portion of a roughly circular eye with an estimated diameter of c. 75 mm., survives intact. The upper surface of the concave but approximately vertical sides is carefully dressed with pock-marks. The depressed, slightly concave grinding face is similarly treated, and the maximum wear has occurred about the skirt where the stone presents a smooth and highly polished gloss. The fragment, although much worn, survives in fairly good condition.
