Roman samian bowl
The complete profile of the vessel is present. The carination is quite marked and the rim coarsely rouletted and everted. The upper zone decoration is a scroll with spiral tendrils, eight pointed rosettes, small five lobed leaves and tendril bindings of probably four beads. The lower zone has straight plain gadroons. The style of decoration is a long lived one. The closest parallel for the scroll is a vessel from Hofheim, the illustration in Ritterling shwos the bowl to have a fairly developed profile. The lower zone with gardroons is not distinctive enough for a parallel to be helpful. As the general style of decoration lasts from Claudian to Flavian times, the fabric and form provide the main basis for dating.
