Recordiad sain / Audio recording: Adriano Candelori
Oral history recording with Adriano Candelori. Part 3 of 3 (AV 11364 - 11366). Recorded as part of the Italian Memories in Wales project (2008-10), delivered by ACLI-ENAIP and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
00.00.28 Adriano thinks his Italian background may have stimulated an artistic interest; inspired by the old masters. He talks about his preparation for work; following through ideas with extensive research. He talks about his work at Steel Company inspiring his tin worker piece, then moving on to depict a coal miner, blacksmith, coopers, wheelwright etc. He married a Welsh woman who was a professional and could support him at the beginning. He made many Welsh friends and settled in easily. Adriano has one son, Dominic. As a young man he was very connected with his Welsh culture, though feeling half Welsh, half Italian. Now he thinks he feels more attached to his Italian roots; he lives in Italy and has a house in England is talented in languages and works at an international school in Italy.
00.22.40 For the first ten years in Wales they went back every year, less as they have got older, since his wife has been ill and airline scares on the television. He lived in Italy for 18 years and in Wales for 55 years yet feels Italian inside. He recalls going back fondly yet when he stays in Italy he misses his home.
