Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of an unidentified Prussian General on horseback facing left, white earthenware, elongated oval base with a gilt line round, good definition. Largely white and gilt, figure in military uniform of black boots, breeches, fitted coat, orange sash across chest and around waist, yellow epaulettes, face naturalistically painted, black hair and whiskers. Left arm resting on left thigh, right arm bent round a plumed helmet holding it against the neck of the horse, figure facing outwards. Horse stepping with head bent, and decorated with gilt stars, black hooves mouth and eyes, pink saddle and saddle cloth. Further gilt detailing on figure and horse, especially mane and tail. Rough ground rising to support horse under belly.
