Red tartan bag formerly containing tatooing equipment. One of a collection of items which belonged to the tattoo artist Jessie Knight
Outside: tartan fabric covering. Brown leather base. Brown leather straps held in place by brass fittings, which are mounted on brown leather vertical inserts. Zip fastener. Brass locking mechanism at one end, mounted on brown leather insert. Pocket at front with brass locking mechanism. Address label above pocket: paper label printed with words ADDRESS and DESTINATION in plastic window with brown leather surround, open at one end. No handwriting on label. Inside bag: Red leather sides. Brown leather base with cardboard panel fixed to centre. Black leather panel marking outline of outside pocket. Inside of pocket in black and red leather
Jessie Knight was the first prominent female tattooist in the UK. She took over her father's tattoo shop in Barry aged 18 in 1927 and went on to prominence whilst working in Chatham, Portsmouth and Aldershot. She returned to Barry in 1968, and continued to work there as a tattoo artist into the 1980s.
