Roman pottery lamp mould
Upper valve, bearing the figure of a swan.
Part of a mould for making pottery oil lamps. The body neck and nozzle are all very distinct. Two holes are shown as projections on the mould, probably to mark the places in the clay where holes were to be cut. On the finished lamp, one hole was for the wick, the other for filling the lamp with fuel. The body of the lamp would have been decorated with the shape of a swan in relief.
