The nuclear-powered submarine Churchill in the Queen Alexandra lock c. 1973. Built at Barrow in 1968, she was one of the Valiant class of Fleet submarines. She has recently been withdrawn from service with the Royal Navy.

Submarine - pennant no. S46. Laid down June 1967 by Vickers Engineering & Shipbuilding Ltd., Barrow-in-Furness, and completed and commissioned in 1970. She was the first of three Churchill-class nuclear powered submarines, and was euipped with a Rolls –Royce reactor, and fitted with pump-jet propulsion.
