Tureen, cover and stand

Cambrian Pottery (Established in Swansea in 1764, the Cambrian Pottery reached its creative peak under the proprietorship of Lewis Weston Dillwyn (1778-1855), who ran the Pottery (with a break between 1817 and 1824) from 1802 to 1836. Lewis Weston Dillwyn was a natural scientist, antiquarian, Member of Parliament, magistrate and landowner whose intellectual interests drove the Cambrian Pottery to become one of the most ambitious and artistically accomplished British potteries of the early 19th century. While the porcelain manufactured in Swansea between 1814 and 1825 justifies its reputation as among the finest of British porcelains, the pottery produced under Dillwyn’s ownership between 1802 and about 1809 was at its best an equally impressive achievement, most particularly that made for sale in the Pottery’s Cambrian Warehouse in London 1806-1808, the context for which this supper service was most likely created.)

Tureen, earthenware, oval shape with square foot-rim, bulging sides sloping inwards at the shoulder with a slightly everted lip-rim, twin upturned horizontal handles with foliate moulding at the terminals, dome shaped cover with handle at the top to match those on the tureen; transfer-printed in blue with the 'Castled Gatehouse' pattern, a castle gateway with twin towers under which two figures pass, another figure and some cattle are in the foregound, a moat and some trees are to one side of the gateway, a floral border to the bottom of the scene, a border of flower heads and stylized scrolling foliage against a blue ground to the interior lip-rim, a scaled-down version of the 'Castled Gatehouse' pattern to the interior bottom of the tureen, the same 'Castled Gatehouse' pattern to the cover, a border of flower heads and stylized scrolling foliage against a blue ground to the rim of the cover, blue markings to the handles on tureen and cover. Stand, earthenware, oval dish shape with flat base, curving sides, spreading rim, extended lobed lip handles; transfer-printed in blue with the 'Castled Gatehouse' pattern as on the tureen, the same border to the rim as on the tureen and cover, fleur-de-lys on a blue ground to the lip handles.
