Iron Age / Roman shield
Much eroded pelta-shaped plaque for the ornamentation of a shield (probably the same shield from which the shield boss fragments under 63.419/1 & 2 derive) which, together with plaque 63.419/6, was cut from a disc 420mm in diameter. The plaque is decorated with a central engraved roundel containing a triskele pattern, similar to the pattern on the shield boss mentioned above, reserved against a basket-work background of triangles and quadrilaterals matted with a rolled graver and ringed with triangles similarly hatched. The convex edge of the plaque was decorated with a chequer band similarly hatched and was fastened to the shield by three rivets. The concave side was decorated with zig-zag lines.
