Roman samian bowl
Numerous sherds from a bowl. The form is slightly unusual, the upper moulding of the coarsely rouletted rim is narrow but sharply everted. The upper zone of decoration is of thick leafy festoons containing fan shaped leaves, alternating with groups of poppy heads on thick vertical stems which rise from small rosettes. The lower zone is a scroll, the upper concavities of which contain a smaller fan leaf and a poppy head, the lower a vertical motif with leaves and a triple bud. Aquitanus used the poppy head and has some slightly similar shcems of decoration. Poppies alternating with large rosettes were used by Bassus and Coelus, while the triple bud is frequently found on vessels stamped by Felix, Masclus and Murranus.
