Obverse. King George III seated on a throne with carved edges, beneath a fringed canopy (above which a royal crown) with curtains drawn back to display an oval shield, ensigned by a crown and encircled by the Garter with its motto: arms as for George I. Beneath the shield, on a ribbon, the motto: DIEU ET MON DROIT. The monarch wears an ermine cloak, with the collar and badge of the Garter; in his left hand is a large orb, in his right hand a sceptre topped by a cross paty; his feet rest upon a tasselled cushion; his court sword is sheathed. To either side of the king stand allegorical figures: on his right hand, moving outwards, 1. Justice (with sword and scales); 2. Minerva with spear, aegis and helmet; 3. Hercules with club and lion skin; on the king’s left hand, moving outwards, 1. Britannia with spear, palm branch and shield: The Union arms, the combined crosses of St Andrew and St George; 2. Piety or Religion, veiled and holding the model of a church; then, wedged in what remains of the field, a lion’s head. Segmented border.
