Roman copper alloy lock bolt
Lock bolt, of common type, operated by a slide key. Originally the bolt was equipped with five holes for tumblers but one is blocked with a plug of lead. The bolt may be compared with one from Leicester which has the corresponding hole similarly blocked but apparently with the tooth of a key. With this type of lock system, there was presumably always a danger of the key losing one or more of its teeth in the bolt. However, if the hole in the bolt could remain blocked whether with the broken tooth or by means of a plug, greater security would be afforded the user of the lock since he would then be equipped with a non standard lock system.
