The sovereign enthroned in state, his righthand holding his sceptre, his left hand the orb topped by a short cross paty, all under a gothic-type canopy; in niches above, and both spearing the serpent, are the figures of, dext. St.George, and sin. St.Michael; in both inner, canopied side niches, is a shield: quarterly, 1. and 4. three lions passant guardant in pale, ENGLAND; 2. a lion rampant within a double tressure flory counterflory, SCOTLAND;3. a harp, IRELAND; the arms of the UNITED KINGDOM; in outer carved and canopied niches, the figures of, dext. Justice, and sin.Fortitude. To either side of the footboard a lion sejant rampant; beneath the footboard, between two lions sejant rampant, a shield: St.George on his horse to right, slaying the dragon. The general design recalls that of the gold sovereign introduced by Henry VII in 1789.
