Welt knife
A welt trimming knife with a circular cutting head for levelling and trimming the surface of the welt after it had been sewn in. The welt was a strong strip of good quality leather sewn round the lasting margin of the upper, and joining it to the insole. The sole was then stitched to the welt by a second seam. The circular head is mounted on a wooden handle. The tool is not pushed, but is held at right angles to the side of the clog or shoe. It is provided with two fences: a rebate across the circular head with bears on the sole edge and prevents damage to the upper; and a plate screwed to the head which acts like the sole of a plane and controls the depth of cut.
