Ebbw Vale, negative
Aerial view of the northern part of Ebbw Vale, looking north. The railway line right (east) of centre in the bottom of the valley, passing beneath the prominent ‘Big Arch’, was the former GWR line to Beaufort. The higher level railway line right (east) of the prominent gasometer was the former LMS branch connecting to the Dowlias to Abergavenny line at the top of the valley. Other railways in the photograph were industrial and owned by Richard Thomas & Baldwins Ltd, proprietors of Ebbw Vale Steel Works (out of view to the south). The prominent Gorsedd circle in the foreground is in Ebbw Vale Park. To the left (west) of the gasometer is one of the former Ebbw Vale Co’s brick works and further left (west) is the same company’s New Brick Yard, marked by a chimney stack. The large rectangular tree-lined enclosure in the middle distance is Ebbw Vale Cemetery. The tips left (west) of the cemetery were from Ebbw Vale No. 7 Pit (higher tip further away) and No.8 Pit (lower, closer tip). In the right (north east) distance lie Carmeltown and Rassa. The former LMS Ebbw Vale High Level Station is adjacent to the Catholic Church in the centre of the photo. To the right (east) is the former GWR Ebbw Vale Low Level Station, beyond Big Arch.
