Medieval ceramic floor tile
Lewis Group 31 Plain tiles
Distinctive fine, pale pink fabric streaked with white, and with a thick white slip up to 5mm thick, glazed a bright green or yellow; bevelled edges and plain bases. The tiles are undecorated and range in size from 150mm to 160mm square and from 24mm to 32mm in thickness; there are also diagonal half-tiles. These tiles are thought to have been made somewhere in the Seine valley. There is documentary evidence that tiles were exported through Rouen and Le Ahvre c.1490-1530, the largest consignment being in 1526-7 (Allan & Keen 1984; Norton 1993b).
This tile has been sampled for analysis. The sampled fragment is stored in the same drawer.
