Sugar bowl, earthenware, standing on a high straight-sided foot-rim, rounded sides, flaring everted rim, a raised edge around the interior bottom of the bowl, rising up from this to the rim a number of vertical ribs, the rim waved; transfer-printed in flow blue with to the interior bottom of the bowl the 'Whampoa' pattern, a chinoiserie-style scene showing in the foreground a number of elaborate pagodas linked by bridges and fences with a spreading willow-like tree hanging over them, in the background further pagodas on islands in an expanse of water, an elongated version of the same pattern to the exterior sides of the bowl, border to the interior rim of flower heads, foliage and scrolls on a scale blue ground.
