Gwybodaeth am y darganfyddiad

Enw'r Safle: Bryn Du, Anglesey

Dull Casglu: surface find
Dyddiad: 1871

Nodiadau: The provenance of this ingot in the departmental documentation is merely cited as "somewhere in Anglesey". However, the article in the "Archaeological Journal" (1873) volume 30, states the provenance as being at Bryndu, near the Rhos Goch railway station. R.F.Tylecote in "Meatallurgy in Archaeology" (1962), table 9, page 32, on the other hand, states the provenance as Bryn-Du, Parys Mountain, the latter actually being approximately four kilometres to the east of Bryn-Du. An article in the "Anglesey Antiquarian Society and Field Club Transactions" for 1969-70, entitled 'A Fragment of Copper Ingot found at Parc Newydd, Llanbedr Goch' has the following note on this matter at the end of the article: "Considerable confusion seems to surround the three ingots which are listed from Bryn Du, Rhosgoch [Rhosybol][one of which is the ingot under consideration here]. Bryn Du farmhouse stands at SH 397 895 and the original account, by T.F.Evans [in the Archaeological Journal of 1873], makes it clear that the ingots were found in the vicinity of this farm, "a few score yards" north of the road from Pengarnedd to Carreglefn. The most probable locality is near a disused quarry N.E. of the farm, which corresponds to Evans's circumstantial account. Certainly the location in Llanbadrig parish, suggested by the RCAHM .... is quite impossible. The situation is further confused by Tylecote's list, for there, the Bryn Du find is conflated with the two ingots from Parys Mountain [now in the British Museum]." The provenance stated in this record has been recorded simply as Bryn-Du, as there is no confusion over this. The question remains as to whether this is at Parys Mountain, or Rhosgoch, Rhosybol. The coordinates are those for Rhosgoch, and were taken from the article in the "Anglesey Antiquarian Society and Field Club Transactions".
