Medal, Cymreigyddion
Silver medal awarded as a prize at the 1837 Cymreigyddion y Fenni eisteddfod for the two best ‘englynion’ to be placed on the walls of the gatehouse of Llanover Hall.
The gatehouse at Llanover Hall was based on Porthmawr Gateway in Crickhowell. This was the 15th gateway and entrance to Herbert Hall which subsequently burnt down.
Cymreigyddion y Fenni is a society founded in 1833 to promote Welsh language and culture in Monmouthshire. One of the main aims of the Society was to hold eisteddfodau. These were so popular that a hall was purpose-built in Abergavenny to accommodate them. The main patron of the eisteddfodau was Lady Llanover. A wide range of competitions were held – such as poetry, essay writing, harp playing and craftwork.
