Tool chest
Black painted wooden tool chest with hinged lid and mortise lock below which the initials of pattern maker/owner and metal handles on each side for carrying.
Inside lid of chest has wooden fixing points to secure storage of handsaw, trammel, angling tools etc.,
Base has been tailored inside to hold three mahogany drawers that meet the top of the base, these sit on wooden runners at side of base. Bottom drawer (765 x 153 x 45mm) has been divided into two halves and contains the larger pattern tools and hammer. At centre on side there is a gold coloured knob. Middle drawer (778 x 165 x 45mm) has been divided into four sections and contains smaller tools, calipers, pliers, etc. Top drawer (789 x 166 x 53mm[including lid]) has hinged lid and has been divided into three sections and contains planing tools, rules, protractor and pencils.
Below these drawers the base has been divided into two halves. One half contains the larger heavier tools, such as planes, a wooden mallet and metal and wooden rules. The other half has been divided into two halves one holding the medium heavier tools while the other contains a small three drawer wooden chest (395 x 139 x133mm). This small chest has leather handles for lifting out of section and back of chest unit has six holes from which drawers can be pushed through for access. Bottom drawer contains lump of wax and wood offcuts. Middle drawer contains trade unions membership cards and printed work related booklets. Top drawer contains wooden plane tools, pencils and crayons.
Loose inside chest are two polythene bags, one containing books, the other containing key to chest, and an envelope containing a handwritten inventory of tools made in 1941.
