Roman samian bowl
The upper decorated zone and rim. The rim is in two unequal zones, but is almost vertical, and very evenly rouletted. The central moulding is fairly broad and the bead borders are large and close set. The upper zone has a very simple straight wreath consisting of large bifid leaves. The spaces are filled with plump sixteen-pointed rosettes with a central hole. No close parallels have been found, a piece from Novaesium is similar in style while some of the sherds stamped by Amandus also show resemblances. The large lower-zone decoration on Knorr 1919, Taf. 7, Aa is also related. The form and decoration thus have strong connections with Tiberian products, but the typically Claudian ware suggests that the bowl should be assigned to an early Claudian date.
