Early Medieval copper alloy strap end
Strap end made from two thin strips of metal soldered together. The strap was fixed by means of a single ritet. the attached end of the tag is decorated with parallel grooves and a saltire. The free end is plain and has a marked bevel on its upper surface, and a less marked one underneath. Similar examples have ben discovered at Chessel Down, IOW, and Herpes, Charente. The Herpes parallel suggests a date in 6th Century AD.
