Early Medieval copper alloy fitting
Gilt bronze stud, with shank for fixing to a backing, perhaps of leather. The rim is defined by a raised ridge, and the field is divided by three similar radial ridges. Such ornamental studs, frequently gilt, are known in Roman in Roman contexts and continue into the Early Christian period, for instance in Ireland; but good parallels for the simple design of our piece are lacking.
