The Bolton Steam Shipping Co. Ltd. was established by Frederic Bolton in London in 1884 and he took delivery of the newly-built steamer Raphael a year later. Most of the ships subsequently owned by the firm were named after artists. The Rievaulx was a 10,974 gross ton ore carrier built at Middlesbrough in 1958 and is seen here arriving at Cardiff with a cargo of iron ore for the East Moors steelworks, c. 1965. She was one of many vessels built for a specific fifteen-year BISCO (British Iron & Steel Company Ore) charter and was sold to Greek owners in 1973 upon the termination of that charter. The Bolton firm ceased shipowning in 1988.
