S.S. GLEN USK, negative
Port Broadside view of S.S. GLEN USK off Cardiff.
Although it was not until the late 1950s that P. & A. Campbell moved their head office from Bristol to Cardiff, most Cardiffians tended to regard the 'White Funnel' fleet as much their own as did the Bristolians! No summer was complete without a trip to Minehead or Ilfracombe on one of their paddle steamers. The Glen Usk was built at Troon in 1914 and her decks were crowded with trippers as she left Cardiff in this 1948 view. Laid up in the early 1960s, she was broken up at Passage West near Cork in 1963. (Source: Shipping at Cardiff: Photographs from the Hansen Collection 1920-1975 by David Jenkins, 1993).
S.S. GLEN USK (524gt). Built 1914 by Ailsa Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Troon, for P & A Campbell’s White Funnel Fleet. She almost immediately entered Royal Navy service as a minesweeper in Scottish waters. This was repeated in 1939. Her peace-time duties were on the Newport - Bristol - Swansea routes, missing only the 1957 season due to poor passenger returns. She was finally laid up again from 1961 and eventually towed to Cork in 1963 for breaking up at Passage West.
