Roman samian bowl, decorated
Ovolo with corded tongue-termina which ends in a rosette. Beneath a bead-row. Free-style decoration : (1) Scattered throughout the field are many seven-beaded rosettes and a number of acanthus-spirals. (2) Bestiarius to R. (cf.D.626) attacking a Boar. A bead-row represents the shaft of the spear. (3) Small human figure to R., beneath the ovolo. (4) Prone human figure to L., legs of, and shield. (5) Panther ro R., below the ovolo. (6) Bear to R. facing a human figure to L. (7) A straight wreath composed of horn-like leaves with serrated borders, forms a lower limit to the design. It is demarcated above and below by bead-rows. Glaze dull, brick-red in colour ; execution rather coarse and indistinct.
