Roman copper alloy disc brooch
Fragmentary with a spring seated between a pair of lugs to the rear. In the centre of the disc is a circular recess, originally enamelled, surrounded by a broad band of bronze, with a circle of raised points, originally silvered, beyond; these are set in a field of enamel, defined by a zig-zag line of bronze, which separates it from an outer zone of apparently blue enamel contained within an outer border. Hull discussed two similar examples from Nor'nour; the type is also discussed by Bateson and Hattatt all cite further examples. The Usk brooch is of the less common, thirteen point star form like an example from near Ipswich, Suffolk discussed by Hattatt.
