Truncheon
Constable's wooden truncheon, painted dark green (unpainted at one end, and some paint now gone). Crown and royal cypher 'GR' painted on top. Turned butt. Early 19th century
The painting and decorating of a truncheon was more than just ornamentation - by having a royal crown or coat of arms, it showed that the constable was acting with the authority of the Crown.
Used by donor's great grandfather when appointed Special Constable, and later in the same role by donor's grandfather, James Thomas of Trap Fram, Devauden Green, near Chepstow
