Bull stopper
An appliance for preventing bulls from breaking out of a field. An instrument of iron rod roughly 8 or hour glass in shape. The ends of the rod, sometimes knobbled, grip the septum of (the) nose as a bull holder does. The greater part of the appliance lies against the animal's forehead and is kept in that position by chains to the horn. Any attempt at forcing the head through a hedge, or using the horns, twist the nose-grip and causes pain.
Bull-stopper, iron with chain attachment and adjustable regulating screw. 19th century. Length 74.3 cm. [Dr E. Scourfield; 1970's]
