Tie-on waist pocket from Dyffryn Crawnon, late 19th century. The front and back of this pocket are each made of a robust satin weave cotton. The lower part of the front is lined with coarser weave cotton and patched on the outside with a piece of softer cotton in a herringbone weave, folded round to also cover part of the back. The inside of the pocket is also much patched. The pocket is mostly sewn by a chain stitch sewing machine. There is hand stitching in the numerous repairs. This pocket belongs to a group of five pockets from the same donor (59.285.6-9 & 59.245.30) with several features in common, such as construction methods and some materials, signs of heavy wear and extensive repair often using the same methods.
