Coarse canvas ground embroidered with coloured wools. Border of full looped wavy line border in red. Upper half: six rows separated by elaborate lines of stitching, containing a Gothic upper case alphabet, numerals 1 to 0, different Gothic upper case alphabet, lower case alphabet and lower case script alphabet. Lower half: three compartments separated by decorative lines of stitching. In first: biblical verse from Proverbs flanked by pair of large elaborate star motifs. In second: maker's inscription and date in italic script, flanked by motifs of crowns and coffee pots. In third: row of various motifs worked close together, including vases of flowers, flowering plants, hearts and butterflies. Inscription: Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs XXII chap VI verse Eliza Davies. Her Work. 1884. Aged 13 Years.
