Medieval lead ampulla
The ampulla is incomplete, missing the neck and the top of the body (with a surviving length of 28.2mm and a weight of 19.8g). The body is closed below the missing neck and has a maximum width of 36.6mm and a thickness of 6.4mm. The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has seven bold and curved ribs, producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59), Type I. The ribs are slightly wider at the base and narrow towards the neck. The reverse face is concave, through damage and is plain with a bevelled edge.
