Stumpwork picture
Small stumpwork picture, 1662. Framed and glazed. Previously owned by the Homfray family of Penllyn Castle.
Embroidered with coloured silks and silver threads. The man and woman in the centre wear contemporary dress, their faces done in raised work. The figures are embellished with metalic thread lace and embroidery. The woman's collar and cuffs are worked in buttonhole stitch and the blue, cream and yellow dress trimmed with silver couched threads. The man's dress and hat is also buttonhole stitch with 'lace' collar and cuffs. Trees and flowers and snail in couched silk and metalic thread, one bird in couched thread, one bird in satin stich. Butterfly or bee has wings in detached buttonhole stitch. Metal spangles on face of sun. Palace in background mainly in french knots, couched threads, detached buttonhole stitch and satin stitch.
Note: The stumpwork picture has been taken out of its frame. The backboard of the frame is stored on the same shelf as the boxed stumpwork. The whereabouts of the rest of the frame are not currently known. KT Nov 2023
