Roman copper alloy brooch
Complete brooch made from sheet-metal, not cast. The brooch has tubular wings, a central disc pierced by a collared rivet and fan-tail. The pin is hinged to a spindle of rolled sheet around which the head has been curved to form the wings. Between the head and the disc a row of incised squares is just discernible. The tail is pierced by two holes, set off-centre, probably for rivets to secure the missing catch-plate, and is decorated with a border of incised strokes. The brooch is without parallel, although many of its features bear comparison with a rosette brooch. It must represent very local manufacture.
