Iron Age pottery storage jar
Rim and body sherds, 8-11mm thick, of quite friable fabric containing sparse quartz, grog and burnt organic inclusions. The sherds have oxidised orange/brown surfaces and a buff/grey core. The jar has a tall, flaring, rounded rim which expands past the limit of the shoulder. This is an unusual form for the Welsh Iron Age with no obvious parallels in the immediate vicinity. Vessels of similar form and size have been recovered from Middle Iron Age contexts at Rainsborough, Northants (Avery et al, 1967, pp258-287, figs, 29, 31 & 32).
