A triple-towered, embattled castle, the crenellations of the wall and towers charged alternately with a lion’s head, a fleur-de-lis, a rose and a cross. A rose and a fleur-de-lis also ornament the walls of masonry to either side of the central gate, whilst each tower is pierced by a quatrefoil opening. Borne on the wall, and largely masking the closed portcullis, is a large shield: gutty de poix, a chief indented with a leopard (lion passant guardant), of ENGLAND, CITY OF CHICHESTER (arms granted in 1570). The legend is preceded by a sun of sixteen rays, some of them truncated, and an ornate cross separates the words
