Upper Palaeolithic flint backed blade
An abruptly-backed blade of convex-backed form. It is made on a long, thin, elegant blade of which one length has been deliberately backed with abrupt, steep, marginal retouch into a convex shape along its entire length. The other edge is unmodified, but due to the thinness of the blade it has experienced some damage evidenced by notches and chipping along this length. The tool is made on a grey flint which is starting to patinate. All but one notch is ancient damage as the flint shows the same levels of patination along its surface. The deeper notch is, however, more recent in date.
